Throughout history the town has always been an important tourist destination and has attracted such celebraties as William II of Germany, many writers such as Goethe, Maupassant, D. H. Lawrence, A. France, Oscar Wilde, and musicians such as Brahms. The beauty of Taormina has also drawn many film directors who have chosen the town as a backdrop to their films.
